Cloe
Cloherty
Barbara Stanley is delighted to be hosting Cloé
Cloherty’s first solo exhibition at the Barbara Stanley
Gallery.Born of Irish parents in 1964, Cloé graduated
from Goldsmith’s College, London with a Degree in Fine
Art and History of Art. Prior to becoming a full time artist,
Cloé spent time travelling abroad where she worked on
film sets which led to becoming a scenic artist on productions
including Indiana Jones, Batman and Hamlet.
She has now been painting full-time
for many years and has earned an International reputation which
goes from strength to strength. Her work is featuredin numerous
private collections in both the UK and abroad.
The works in this exhibition bring together
the two main elements of Cloé’s work – Landscapes
and Nudes. Although using very different techniques, they aim
to do the same thing – to capture a ‘moment’
without losing the immediate intensity of a fleeting glance
and with an innate knowledge of the subject. For the landscape
paintings in this Exhibition, Cloé focus is Ireland and
in particular the West Coast and Donegal. Working in situ, Cloé
makes sketches of her response to the dramatic, ever-changing
landscape. She uses colour as a means of expression, striving
to convey her own emotional reaction to the beauty and magnificence
around her. The larger works are completed in Cloé’s
studio. Based on her sketches, she applies bold thick strokes
of paint to the canvas using a palette knife which further enhances
the energy, intensity and beauty of her images.
Cloé’s nude studies are
an expression of the human spirit, a response to the human condition
in all its forms, soulful, solitary and brooding. She always
works from life as it is the dynamic of working with the model
that feeds the emotional intensity. Cloé paints with
great speed to retain the vitality of thepose and to engage
the energy of the model. She discards the finished work if she
feels that the spontaneity and essence of the pose has not been
captured. The result of both techniques becomes apparent. It
is to crystallise and encapsulate an emotional intensity, a
clarity of feeling and an empathy with the subject – be
that a dancing figure, a sleeping model or an impending storm.
