Artist Statement
The new 'Interior' work by Geraldine O'Sullivan features
the ordinary and extraordinary, she through her work allows
the viewer to access the unknown, the magical and the hidden.
O Sullivan uses 'collage' as the starting point upon which
she builds these rich canvases.Collage is an ancient art
form however it was during the modernist era that the genre
really came into its own.More than any other form of artmaking,
collage offers a retreat from logic and reason transforming
the familiar into the strange and fantastic.Like alchemy,
it allows the emergence of unexpected elements, tearing a
hole in the fabric of reality and opening up experience
into the realms of dreams and the subconscience. The ground
work for the canvases is the traditional tearing and pasteing
of printed images. However Geraldine O'Sullivan has taken
the process a step further by employing inkjet printing
of selected images onto the canvas and then the building
up of painted panels mimicing the torn edges of the paper.Layering
paint on paint until the work is complete.
