Joseph
Sloan
Born 1940, Warrenpoint, Co. Down, Ireland, Joseph Sloan is a self-taught
artist whose career initially began in professional theatre. He
was invited to teach in London at Camden Arts Centre in 1983 and
1984 and a project “Exploring Scuplure”, Ateliers Fourwinds, Provence
in 2004.
His sculpture has been exhibited since the early eighties in
Ireland, Britain, Norway and France. The exhibitions include Royal
Hibernian Academy Summer and Banquet Exhibitions 1991-2000; Aer
Rianta Arts Festival “Gateway to Art” Dublin Airport, 1994-1997;
Fredrikstad Bibliotek, Norway; Royal Festival Hall, London; Royal
Society of Etchers and Engravers, London; Gallerie Sculptures,
Paris. Joseph’s work is held in public collections throughout
Europe and America and private collections worldwide. The public
collections include Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern art,
Dublin; Fredrikstad Cultural Centre, Norway; Bank of Ireland;
First Bank of Maryland, Baltimore, USA; KPMG, Dublin; Irish Life;
Prudential Life Insurance of North America & Canada; Ulster
TV.
He has won many awards and commissions, including numerous Gold
and Silver Medals at the Salon d’Arts Plastiques, Chateau-Arnoux
and Cavaillon, France. In 2001 Joseph was commissioned for EuroPAWS
MIDAS TV Drama Awards.
Joseph endeavours to push out the boundaries of his sculpture,
exploring different techniques of working with the figurative
image.
