Philip Lindey was born in Rochdale in 1968, of
Irish parents who relocated back to Ireland a year or two later. In
1985 he did a foundation Course at Sligo Regional College, followed
by a Diploma.
In 1992 Philip graduated from the National College of Art in
Dublin. For the next few years he found himself involved in group
shows, open submissions and numerous portrait commissions. In
1997 he put together a body of work for his solo show in the Galway
Arts Centre. The following year he began his Master of Fine Arts
Degree, and after graduating had a successful solo exhibition
in Belfast.
In 1999 Lindey participated in a group show at the Albemarle
Gallery, where his work attracted extraordinary interest. His
portraits are clearly not accurate representation of particular
individuals, yet they capture the spirit, the essence of the person
portrayed, leaving the viewer with a sense of having encountered
these colourful characters in every day life.
